Short Senate session likely

Senate is in for another short session today with the only one bill to debate ? about setting up a committee to handle pay rises for politicians.

That bill had all-party support in the House of Assembly where MPs said it would remove the problem of politicians deciding how much to pay themselves.

Senate leader Alf Oughton said: "I don't suppose anyone is going to vote against it. I think it's a good way to go as it takes pay rises away from the arena itself."

Barring a mammoth free debate in the motion to adjourn, Sen. Oughton said he believed the session would soon be over.

"It's the same again next week, there are only a couple of motions on the agenda on bus and ferry fares."

He said the Senate had not gone past lunchtime this session because of the lack of legislation.

"It leaves something to be desired, but I am led to believe there is a whole gaggle of legislation coming down which we will scramble to do before the summer."

However he said the situation wasn't uncommon and the Senate would sit on more days to get it all done.
