Steve gets brides fit for their special day

Steve Burgess puts the brides-to- be through their paces.

Most single men would turn and run if they were told they had to spend an evening with 15 women discussing their upcoming weddings.

Instead, Steve Burgess makes the brides-to-be do the running. Mr. Burgess operates Bridal Boot Camp four times a week and he?s committed to helping the women prepare for their big day.

He says the women have already discussed the colour schemes, locations, costs and photographers they are using on their big day. And Mr Burgess is picking up on other things. He is now acutely aware that arms are in this season.

?They have described their dresses and they are all very concerned about their arms,?he said. ?We are working on their triceps a lot. Overall conditioning is also quite important to them. They all want to look good on the day and I have asked them to entrust me with that challenge and not the pressure of jumping on the scale.?

The boot camp started five weeks ago and involves three hours of exercise a week. Mr. Burgess has two groups at the moment, both consisting of approximately 15 people. Although the concept is quite new, he has already seen some results.

?One bride was married last week. She was already doing a lot of cardio so I focused on sculpting the body,? he said. ?In particular her triceps and back so that when she wore the dress it would look quite stunning.?

Mr. Burgess, whose fitness business is called Back to Basics, said the idea took off when a young woman he trained at Berkeley institute asked for help in preparing for her big day.

?I had trained Marisa Hall in the 1990s when she was a student at Berkeley and interested in track,? he said. ?She saw me recently and said ?I want you to get me back into the shape I was in when doing track?.

?Her wedding is in September so we figured out a timeline. Others were interested and I asked her if more people could be involved and she said we should call it Bridal Boot Camp.

?Along the way other brides have signed up with their bridal parties. I have people on the waiting list for their weddings next summer.?

Another thing Mr. Burgess has learned by being surrounded by so many women with one goal in mind is that it takes an exorbitant amount of planning to pull off the flawless picturesque wedding.

?The brides are very organised they have everything scheduled. I have had women call me to let me know they are getting married in September, 2007. They want to make sure there is room in next year?s sessions for their bridal party. Like the reception and pastor they see putting a personal trainer into the schedule as important.?

People interested in signing up for Bridal Boot Camp this year or next year can call 292-0789 or 535- 5314.

Mr. Burgess has been training athletes on the Island for decades. Before returning to Bermuda, he trained athletes, particularly runners, at the University of Georgia. His company philosophy is getting people exercising in the great outdoors. The groups meet at places like Elbow Beach and the Botanical Gardens. They do things like running up hills ? 50 times ? running through water and playing dodgeball.

?A lot of time people use the excuse that they can?t afford a gym or don?t have the equipment,? he said. ?The programme I run has them outdoors doing things they can easily do any time.?

He hopes that the women will not only look spectacular at their wedding but he also wants them to incorporate fitness into their rest of their life.

?The bride that got married last week was very stressed in the week leading up to her wedding,? he said. ?We tried to schedule in a workout but she had too many things to do.

?I spoke to her the morning of her wedding to see how she was feeling and she said she went for a run. It was heart-warming to know that she had committed to exercise and saw it as a way to relieve stress.?

Mr. Burgess laughed when he was asked his marital status, saying people have asked him if he?s qualified to take on so many brides.

?I am not married,? he said. ?When I told a buddy of mine about this he looked me dead in the eye and asked how many brides I was dealing with. I told him ten brides and he said: ?I can tell you have never been married. I had just one bride and that was stress.?

?It was then that I realised I was dancing in an unknown hall. But I am delighted to be able to assist someone in their preparation for their big day. They are all motivated already by their desire to look spectacular on their big day.

? I am just helping them get there.?
