TCD frustrates hopeful hot dog vendor

A St. George?s man who hoped to set up a mobile hot dog stand has blasted the Transport Control Department for blocking his bid to get a business vehicle licence for his light van.

Dion Smith bought a light van to tow the hot dog stand, and has approval to run a catering service, but TCD will not grant a light personal vehicle licence until he has run the business for three months.

But Mr. Smith said he cannot run the business until he gets the licence.

TCD told him they wanted to crack down on light vans.

?They told me to use a personal vehicle to tow the trailer but I don?t have one,? he said.

He invested $3,000 in the van and spent a further $1,500 on a trailer and importing the product not to mention the time and effort that he has given the project.

Mr. Smith said his intention was to serve pub-goers on their way home.

The van has already had a suitable licence, leading Mr. Smith to question why it cannot be transferred to him.

Transport Permanent Secretary Mark Telemaque said Mr. Smith has the option to appeal to the Minister.

Asked if Government was cracking down on light vans, he said: ?The Minister is addressing traffic congestion. In any event that is part of a wider policy.?
