Teen dies in horror cycle crash
A young man died as a result of a collision at the junction of Ferry Reach Road shortly after 5 p.m. yesterday, friends and family quickly gathered at the scene of the accident to comfort one another.
Traffic was backed up for miles late yesterday afternoon while Police investigated the road traffic fatality. Police would not reveal the name of the young man but did say he was a 17-year-old St. George?s resident. A Police spokesman said the young man was travelling east on Mullet Bay Road, near the junction with Ferry Reach Road.
The young man was overtaking traffic, the spokesman said, when he lost control and struck another vehicle also travelling east. He suffered serious injuries from the accident.
A family friend, who did not wish to be named, said the young man was a ?wonderful kid, just really great?. The family friend said he knew the young man very well but did not wish to say anything more out of respect for the family.
Relatives of the young man could not be reached by the last night.
It has been reported that the vehicle the young man struck subsequently ran over him as it was unable to stop.
The young St. George?s resident is Bermuda?s fifth road fatality this year and second teenager to die on Bermuda?s roads in 2006.
Eighteen-year-old Ryan Burgess died in February 10th on Parsons Lane. Alvin Flood, who was 45, died on March 4th on North Shore Road and 20-year old Samuel Fubbler died on March 22 on Middle Road. Michael James Douglas was the fourth road traffic fatality. He died on Palmetto Road at the junction of Bishop Spencer Road at the of 53 on May 5.
At this time last year the Island already had eight road fatalities. The total number of deaths on the Island?s roads last year was 13.
