Teenage riders off to compete in Barbados

TWO of Bermuda's up and coming show jumpers flew to Barbados yesterday to compete in the first round the of the 2008 Caribbean Junior Jumping Competition.

Representing Bermuda will be 14-year-old Sarah Wight and 15-year-old Hannah Keane. Both girls ride out of Spicelands Riding Centre and they will be accompanied by coach Christian Baier who is an instructor at Spicelands.

Other countries competing this weekend will be the Cayman Islands and Trinidad as well as the hosts Barbados.

This is the first CEA competition experience for both girls but their recent good results in show jumping classes at local shows has given them the confidence to do well in the event in which all competitors ride on borrowed horses.

To give them some experience of competing on horses they are not familiar with, both have had the chance to ride different horses at Spicelands.

The duo will have today to do some training and then they will compete on Saturday and Sunday.

There are six countries in this year's competition ¿ Bermuda, Barbados, Antigua, the Cayman Islands, Trinidad and Jamaica.

Bermuda will act as hosts in the next round set for April 26-27. Bermuda will be hoping to reproduce the form they had in 2004 when they won the competition. Last year Jamaica were crowned champions.

This will be the 10th year of the competition.
