Tropical Storm Irene expected to pass today

Though Tropical Storm Irene will not be as much of a problem for Bermuda as originally suggested, it is still considered to be a potential threat to the Island.

The Bermuda Weather Service expects Irene to be at its closest point at 3 p.m. today, at which time the tropical storm will be located 314 nautical miles south southwest of the Island.

This has been a difficult storm to forecast, as it has changed its path several times throughout the week, nonetheless Irene is predicted to reach hurricane strength late tonight.

Currently the tropical storm is moving westerly to the south and is headed toward ?Hurricane Alley? between Bermuda and the United States.

When considering the possibility that Irene may turn closer to Bermuda, nothing can be ruled out as the storm does fall within 400 miles of the Island.

Meteorologist Kimberley Zuill said: ?There is a very small possibility (but) Bermuda is not in the tract swath.?

Unfortunately the Carolinas will not be quite as lucky as forecasters have predicted that the majority of the impact will be off the shore of North Carolina.

Though Irene will be at its closest point today, Ms Zuill predicted the Island would see harsher weather conditions on Saturday.

During this time there is expected to be higher seas and more blustery weather, as well as possibly one or two showers.
