You?re about to sentence the wrong guy, your worship
A prison mix-up almost led to a Westgate prisoner serving another man?s sentence ? because he had the same name.
Allan William Daniels, 26, of Brooklyn Lane, Pembroke, was scheduled to be sentenced for the possession of a firearm.
However, prison officers had brought another man named Allan Daniels from Westgate to Supreme Court, forcing Puisne Judge Charles Etta-Simmons to adjourn the sentencing later that morning. She rescheduled the sentencing for September 6, at 2.30 p.m.
Daniels was found not guilty of the attempted murder of a Police officer on Court Street by a Supreme Court jury in May of this year.
But the jury did find Daniels guilty of possession of ammunition without a licence, possession of $73,000 worth of cannabis and cocaine with intent to supply, possession of drug equipment and possession with intent to supply cocaine found in his car.
Drunken driver ignored warning
A man paid the penalty for ignoring Police warning about drinking and driving.
Keerome Maybury was fined $1,000 and disqualified from all vehicles for 12 months after he pleaded guilty to driving while impaired.
The 25 year old, of Devonshire, was arrestede on June 16 on suspicion of driving while impaired, near Richmond Road and Woodbourne Avenue.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner heard that Police in uniform observed Maybury at the 24-hour Esso Tiger Market talking loudly and acting obnoxiously. They noticed he smelled of intoxicants and his eyes were glassy.
Police officers cautioned Maybury about the laws on drinking and driving and asked Maybury if he had anything to drink and he responded: ?Of course I had a drink.?
Maybury then left the Tiger Market on his black motorcycle and was stopped by officers west of Woodbourne Avenue and asked if he had anything to drink and replied: ?Of course I had a drink, it?s Wednesday.?
After being arrested Maybury and taken to Hamilton Police Station, Maybury volunteered to take a breath sample and his lowest reading was 110 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millitres of blood.
Maybury apologised for wasting the court?s time and said he should have got off the bike when advised to do so.
Mr. Warner fined Maybury $1,000 for driving while impaired and disqualified from all vehicles for 12 months or spend three months in custody. The fine must be paid immediately.
Cash taken from charity container
An unemployed Pembroke woman received an 18-month suspended sentence for stealing $29 from a container belonging to a local charity at a Front Street store.
Melissa Ann Sousa, 36, admitted taking the container, belonging to the Physical Abuse Centre, from Dismont Robinson & Co. on August 17 and then fleeing the store before being apprehended by Police.
?It was a very stupid thing to do,? Sousa said.
