Angry cake thrower pays for damage

A man threw a cake at his girlfriend and broke a glass door at her office after an argument on his birthday.

Howard Paynter, 26, pleaded guilty to criminal damage when he appeared before Magistrates' Court.

Principal Crown counsel Malcolm McColm said Paynter went to the Bank of Bermuda in Par la Ville Road to visit girlfriend Tishea O'Conner on August 22 last year.

They got into an argument in the reception area which saw Paynter become verbally abusive and raise his hands in a threatening manner as if to strike Ms O'Conner.

According to Mr. McColm, she ran out through a door and closed it on him — but Paynter chased her, threw a cake at her and banged on the door telling her to open it.

The glass pane in the door cracked, with the bank reporting the damage caused to be $1,520.

Paynter, a Works and Engineering employee from Broome Street, Sandys, admitted responsibility for the incident and offered to pay. He came to court with a $2,000 bank draft to cover the cost of the damage — telling Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo: "My girlfriend actually done the draft."

However, he took exception to the version of events outlined by the prosecutor, saying this was inaccurate.

Mr. Tokunbo granted Paynter an absolute discharge, noting that the money he brought more than covered the cost of the damage.
