Berkeley Institute pupils take a Digital Safari

Eye on the future: Minister of Environment, Telecommunication and E-Commerce Neletha Butterfield watches as students from Berkeley Institute learn the ins and outs of digital photography during Wednesday's "Digital Safari".

A group of Berkeley Institute students went on a "Digital Safari" on Wednesday with the help of the Bermuda Union of Teachers (BUT), BTEC and Adobe and Olympus Corporations.

Roughly 80 students took part in workshops intended to help Primary school students enhance their technology skills and become more familiar with digital photography.

"The students were taught how to use digital cameras, taking photos at Elbow Beach and then returning to The Berkeley Institute to upload their shots and manipulate them using Adobe's Photoshop software," said a Government press release on the workshop.

The event was jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Environment, Telecommunications and E-Commerce as well as BTEC and BUT.

Olympus and Adobe provided two instructors for the workshop free of charge.

The event was intended as a prelude to the Ministry's upcoming "Technology Week" — scheduled for May 7-12, 2007 — and as part of the BUT's annual teachers' conference which is currently underway.

"We recognise that preparing our children for the future means providing ongoing opportunities to increase their technological skills so that we continue to stay competitive in this global digital society," said Minister Neletha Butterfield.
