Cop shows photos of happy relationship

A Policeman accused of stalking the mother of his child produced family photos in court in support of his argument that he did not cause her harm.

Robert Butterfield is said by his ex to have followed her and their daughter between July 1 and July 25 last year, acted in an abusive manner, and forced her into sex on one occasion.

Butterfield is not charged with any sex offence, and denies the stalking charge.

He told Magistrates’ Court yesterday that he had had a “flirtatious-type” conversation on the phone with the woman on July 14, the date she accuses him of the sex attack.

“She said she loved me and so I kissed her,” he claimed of the encounter they had when he later went to her house. Butterfield maintained that while they did have sex, this was consensual.

The defendant, who said his accuser let him take their child out on an almost daily basis during the period in question, produced photographs of her combing their baby’s hair, on July 16.

He went on to give evidence that there was an argument between them on July 20 when he saw a man he recognised from his Police duties — who he did not approve of — playing with the child.

He said he refused to hand the baby back to her mother during the argument that ensued, with her calling the Police.

“I was embarrassed, for one, because of my status that I was a Police officer,” he said in his evidence. He claimed that the woman had not made any allegation that day that he had hit her or threatened to do so, and had never indicated that she had a problem with him calling to pick up their daughter until that point.

Magistrate Juan Wolffe has asked this newspaper to exercise discretion in naming the complainant, and an editorial decision has been made not to do so.

Butterfield is currently suspended from The Bermuda Police Service. He is set to continue his defence when the trial resumes next month.
