Govt. releases Drug Control Action plan
The Department of National Drug Control released a five year Action Plan last week.
In it the Government outlined how it plans to reduce the supply and consumption of drugs on the Island.
It sets targets for the Government including; to increase the number of drug treatment facilities; reduce drug use; reduce availability of drugs; reduce drug related crimes; reduce illicit trafficking and money laundering.
"The drug phenomenon is one of the major concerns of the citizens and residents of Bermuda and a major threat to the internal security and public health of society," it was stated in the plan.
"The use of drugs, particularly among young people is at a comparatively high level."
The Government also outlined "54 concrete activities" that should be implemented in a set time period.
These include:
? increased bed capacity for both men and women at treatment facilities and completion of redevelopment of Captain's in Charge by the end of 2008.
? A recommendation for the development of treatment services in prison was completed in 2007.
? A recommendation for reintegration services or supportive housing for people when they leave prison was completed in 2007.
?A recommendation on methods to monitor drug use of prisoners was completed in 2007.
? Mandatory enrolment of incarcerated persons in drug treatments programmes in prisons in 2008.
? Introduction of needle exchange in 2008
? Create legislation for mandatory intervention for all drunk drivers or those driving under the influence of drugs in 2008
? Use funds from Confiscated Assets Fund to finance drug treatment and community rehab in 2008
? Develope a template drug free workforce, sports clubs and at schools in 2008
