Jubilee Park to get facelift

Construction workers and landscapers work to beautify Jubilee Park, off Parson's Road, Pembroke.

Another of Bermuda's public parks will get a facelift creating an area of recreation and relaxation just in time for the Christmas opening.

Jubilee Park, on Parsons Road, is in need of a serious upgrade and the Corporation of Hamilton has taken responsibility for giving it a facelift.

According to a press release, the Corporation acquired the one-acre piece of property five years ago and expanded the original park to just under two acres.

Mayor of Hamilton, Sutherland Madeiros said: "Jubilee Park was always intended to be green space and as Hamilton grows, the Corporation recognises its commitment to revitalise North Hamilton and to preserve and maintain green spaces within the City."

The land had morphed into a dumping ground for bikes, old mechanical parts and shipping containers and the facelift means the rubbish has been removed and the pond and natural peat basin have been restored.

Three-thousand cubic yards of mulch were taken from Marsh Folly to spread over the park, which is surrounded by fence to prevent illegal dumping.

The whole park except for the pond will be covered with three inches of soil which will be greened over with winter grass in time for a Christmas opening.

Steven De Silva, the Corporation's Superintendent of Parks, said: "We have gone to great lengths to maintain the natural environment of this land and to develop it as an amenity park for North Hamilton.

"Although we have concentrated heavily on the environment, this is not a nature reserve, it's a park for the local neighbourhood where people can go and sit in a green setting.

"We have deepened the water in the pond so that we can introduce guppies to control mosquito breeding and we will also be adding water lilies to enhance the beauty and to give a sense of relaxation. The pond will have a fence installed around it so that the area is safe for young children".

"The Corporation is very pleased with the residents' reaction to the work and we hope to be able to give them a new park as a Christmas present. We hope this park will be transformed into an area of beauty that will rival Par-la-Ville Park and Victoria Park".
