Liquor store burglar remanded into custody
A vagrant admitted to stealing cash, liquor and miscellaneous items even though he claims to have no recollection of the incident.
Fitzgerald Hardtman was charged with entering Carousel Liquors, on Front Street, as a trespasser, stealing the items and having in his possession articles in connection with burglary namely a white towel to cover his head, a flashlight, a screwdriver and a hammer.
Magistrates Court heard from Crown Counsel Nicole Smith, the complainant locked the door of the liquor store the night before and when a staff member opened it the following morning, a window was broken and the cash register was smashed and on the floor.
The complainant called the Police and identified Hardtman on the video surveillance taking the items.
The defendant stole $700 cash from the register, two bottles of Chivas Regal worth $152, $150 worth of international calling cards, $425 worth of bingo tickets, two ten pack cartons of Marlboro Cigarettes, 12 bottles of Dwyer's White Whiskey worth $300 and six bottles of Smirnoff Vodka worth $120.
When arrested, the 59-year old said he didn't recall what happened because he had been drinking.
In court, Hardtman told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner: "I can't recall anything. They showed me the photo and it looked like me but I'm not sure if it's me."
Magistrate Warner ordered Social Inquiry and BARC reports and remanded the defendant into custody until sentencing in December.
