Man caught after stealing steaks
A Somerset man put up a fight after he was chased by Police and a store manager for stealing steaks.
Vaughn Brangman, of Scott's Hill Road, pleaded guilty to stealing two beef tenderloin steaks, valued at $45.52, from Somerset Marketplace on July 14.
Magistrates' Court heard from Crown counsel Nicole Smith, that Brangman was seen in the store at 5.30 p.m. taking items of food in the cold food area.
The 40-year old was acting suspiciously but went to stand in the line leading to the cashier. Brangman left the line and walked out of the store without paying for the steaks.
The manager called out to him but he didn't stop and began running to the Dollar Depot.
Ms Smith said the manager began to chase the defendant into the compound of Springfield Nursery where the two steaks fell out of his shirt.
Police were alerted and when they came to the scene, they saw the defendant jumping over a wall, through residence's yards and over fences.
They also began to chase the defendant and when they finally arrested him, he was taken to the Somerset Police Station.
In court yesterday, Brangman said he was sorry for the inconvenience he has caused.
"I'm ashamed and embarrassed. It's definitely not in my character. I'm no thief. I don't know what got into me after all these years. I'm still in awe."
Brangman was fined $500 to be paid immediately.
