Tight security planned for New Years events
Promoters of New Year's Eve parties and Police are assuring revellers their safety is the number one priority and extra security will be on hand.
In light of the holiday shootings, there will be extra Police officers at most of the NYE events to ensure gang-related violence does not take place and a peaceful, fun time is had by everyone.
Three major events taking place Monday night include 'Hollywood' by Barmuvinjam at Berkeley Institute Auditorium, Celebrity New Years featuring Collie Buddz and Shaggy at Par-La-Ville car park and Unité's parties at both Greg's Steakhouse, Fresco's and Opus Lounge.
A spokesperson for Barmuvinjam said security is one of their major goals despite the holiday shootings and said there will be extra officers to make sure the night is violence-free.
"In light of what's going on, we're definitely going to have more Police presence in the area.
"The type of patrons we are expecting is our usual crowd and we've never really had those sort of incidents, so we don't expect that sort of element to be at this event.
"We have stepped up the security even further but that's just as a precaution. We feel pretty confident that it will be a very safe event. We have more than enough security and are taking some extra steps to making sure everyone is safe."
Belcario Thomas of Unité said: "The first way that we heighten our security is by having a high level of branding and niche promotions.
"We don't mass market our events and they appeal to a like-minded group of people who we hope look forward to enjoying themselves versus destroying themselves."
Mr. Thomas added the events will take place at high-quality venues where violence is not tolerated.
He said there will be eight security guards between Fresco's and Opus and a handful at Greg's Steakhouse.
Frederick Jelliff of Morley Productions, one of the organisers of the Collie Buddz and Shaggy event said before the event starts, Police and security guards will sweep through the venue in case anyone has hidden weapons.
He said: "There's going to be a huge Police presence in uniform and out of uniform with metal detectors.
"Everyone will be checked with a metal detector. Security is our number one concern.
"We have a large hired security force with the backing of the Corporation of Hamilton, CID, and heavy Police presence all around.
"Our security will be highly visible and everything goes but zero tolerance to any violence."
Acting Superintendent Tyrone Smith yesterday ensured the public that increased mobile and foot patrols are planned for New Year's Eve Island-wide.
These patrols will include the reserves and some of them will be armed, however, Superintendent Smith could not specify how many more officers would be on hand.
He also urged the public to not drink and drive over the upcoming weekend and New Year and encouraged them to use the free transportation offered by CADA.
