Walton Brown denies editor claims
PLP candidate Walton Brown has denied suggestions that he would be the editor of a rumoured new daily newspaper.
Premier Ewart Brown hinted that a new daily could be starting on the Island at a PLP Sandys meeting Tuesday evening.
Since then he has refused to comment on the topic.
A post on a local blog, www.bermudasucks.com, suggested that Mr. Brown, who is running for the PLP in Pembroke West, was going to edit the new paper.
But Mr. Brown laughed when he was asked about it.
"No, I will not be editing any new paper," he said.
Mr. Brown owns Bermuda Network News, an online news service, and was an editor of the now defunct daily newspaper, The Times, in the 1990s.
When asked if he had heard that a new daily could be coming to the Island he said: "I have heard it mentioned many times over the years."
Mr. Brown said another daily paper would be beneficial be creating competition and providing readers with two different view points and editorials.
He also said that Bermuda had enough advertising dollars to sustain two dailies, particularly as companies on the Island seemed more resistant to advertising online than elsewhere in the world.
The claim that a new paper could be coming to the Island was made by the Premier on Tuesday evening. After complaining about The Royal Gazette's coverage of the Government on Tuesday he said: ""For the past nine years you have had to wonder what is and what is not when you read something in the paper.
"It's not like you can pick it up — as you will be able to in the near future — and believe it.
"That was a hint."
Since then the Premier has not answered repeated requests for more information.
He was asked if the new paper would be Government run, similar to the Government's television channel CITV, or if private individuals were looking to open the a new paper.
His press secretary Glenn Jones said the Premier had "nothing to add" to the topic.
