They are being sent questionnaires by the National Association for Reconciliation (NAR).

Questions include "Do you acknowledge the existence of racism in Bermuda?'' and "Do you consider racism a serious problem in Bermuda?'' Candidates are also asked whether they support the NAR, and, if elected, what they would do to enhance race relations.

Yesterday the NAR said it wanted race relations to be debated during the election.

"We feel that if this important issue is not dealt with honestly and openly, Bermuda's future as a stable country will be put at risk,'' a spokeswoman said.

She said it was important to see where candidates stood on race.

Deadline for returning questionnaires was September 29, and findings would probably be published before the October 5 election, she added.
