after pleading guilty to several traffic offences yesterday.

Levar Burton Jones pleaded guilty before Senior Magistrate Will Francis to refusing to comply with a Police request for a breath sample in December.

The Bermuda College student, who told Mr. Francis he only drove to make sure he a got a friend home, also admitted a charge of escaping custody.

He was caught after a 100 metre chase, a fact which prompted Mr. Francis to ask: "You're not on the College track team are you? You didn't get too far, or maybe you took on the wrong officer.'' Jones was given a discounted fine of $250 -- because he is a student -- for refusing the breath sample.

But Jones, 22, of Ocean Avenue, denied a charge of riding while impaired.

Crown counsel Larry Mussenden offered no evidence on the charge.

Jones also pleaded guilty to charges of escaping custody, making false statements, and riding while disqualified by age, for which he was fined a total of $500. The fines must be paid by June 30.

Mr. Francis heard that Jones was riding a cycle with a passenger at 3 a.m. on December 17 when he was stopped for a routine check.

Mr. Mussenden said officers noted Jones' speech was slurred and gave the name of Jamal Simmons. His passenger also gave a false name.

Jones was questioned again and again told Police the fictitious name, and when they told him he would be arrested on suspicion of impaired driving, Jones ran away.
