And he called on Island entrepreneurs to come up with a safe way of carrying small children on the back of bikes.

Magistrate Edward King was speaking after young mother Tammy Edness, of Albert Road, Sandys, admitted three driving offences after an her bike collided with a car, seriously injuring her and her two-year-old daughter Maunicka.

At Magistrates' Court, Edness admitted driving without due care and attention and without a headlight on Middle Road, Sandys Parish, around 10 p.m. on July 30.

She further admitted unlawful carrying of a child on the front of a scooter and driving without a valid licence.

Mr. King -- who fined the accused a total of $450 -- said the offences amounted to "driving a death machine''.

He added: "There must be someone ingenious enough to come up with a little cubby hole behind the machine.'' Ms Edness broke her pelvis, as well as both legs and both wrists in the smash.

Her daughter suffered a broken shoulder and minor head injuries.

Mr. King said he had seen a lot of complaints about children been carried on the front of bikes.

He added: "I can see why you had her in front. I've seen children clutching on and falling asleep -- I've seen some mothers thoughtful enough to attach the child with a belt.''
