Dining is to return to the Carriage House in St George’s the Polaris restaurant is to relocate there this spring.Abdul Amjath, who runs Polaris with his wife Carolann, said it was his hope to bring some life back to the Old Town. The area has been hard hit with closures in recent years. A popular East End pub and restaurant, the Carriage House closed down at the end of 2009.Mr Amjath said: “People loved the Carriage House. It was a great place to dine at this end of the Island. There are a lot of people in St George’s and they will still come out for dinner if we give reasonable prices and quality service.”Polaris is now based out of the St George’s Dinghy and Sports Club although its lease there will soon end.The Amjaths plan to call their relocated restaurant Polaris of Carriage House.“We will be having a bigger menu with sushi and local dishes. We are planning also to bring the old Carriage House menu back, but with quite a bit of changes. We’ll be doing Sunday brunches as well.”Mr Amjath said he had worked out a deal with property owner David Summers of Wilkinson Estates to move into the Carriage House building by mid-March. A gala opening is planned for later that month.“St George’s is a very unique and special place in Bermuda and people like to visit, but business has been dying. People will be happy to see a restaurant there again.”He said keeping the price down and the portion size ample would attract diners in spite of economic difficulties.A liquor licence application is currently under review. Mr Amjath said the Carriage House is “all stripped down and brand new”, with a new bar, and will soon be seeking local staff.Considered a landmark restaurant for nearly 30 years in St George, the Carriage House was owned and run by George Hoermann.Mr Hoermann’s family decided to close the restaurant down after his death, citing economic difficulties.
