plan for a new garden at Waterville.

The application requested permission to build a new garden with a gazebo, walls, terraces and new cesspit, to renew Watlington water works line, and to renovate the sea wall and lighting.

The Board made a number of specifications regarding the landscaping of the new garden, and stated: "In order to protect the trees which are to be retained, no demolition, site clearance or building operations shall commence until protective fencing of a height to exceed 42 inches has been erected around each tree.'' Commenting on the approval, Director of the Bermuda National Trust Ms Amanda Outerbridge said: "We are really pleased and I think that it will be an outstanding addition to Waterville.'' She added that there had been some controversy surrounding the plans to renovate the Trust grounds which had led to several letters to the Editor of The Royal Gazette .

"One of our former employees, property officer Mr. Hubert Jones, objected to the plans,'' Ms Outerbridge said.

"He disapproved of the bulldozing required for the new cesspit and he also said the garden as it was was historic.

"However, the garden (as it was) was quite messy.''
