A 39-year-old Sandys Parish man was fined $1,250 in Magistrates' Court yesterday for assaulting five Policemen, damaging a wooden panelling at the Somerset Police Station and using offensive behaviour.

Denzil Lloyd Dill of Cann Drive, was charged with using offensive words on Broome Street, assaulting P.c. Adrian Brewer and damaging a wooden panel at the Somerset Police Station on March 8, 1994.

He pleaded guilty to those charges, but denied several other assaults on Sgt.

Graham Alderson, P.c. MacDonald Hinds, P.c. Richard Tempest-Mitchell and P.c.

Stephen Cox.

After a Magistrates' Court trial on August 29, 1994, before the Wor. Mrs.

Cheryl Mapp, Dill was found guilty and a social inquiry report was ordered.

The charges arose out of an incident on Broome Street around 12.45 a.m. when Police responded to a complaint that a man was causing a disturbance.

They arrived and found Dill and another man outside a house. A woman was asking him to leave because he was drunk and argumentative.

As Dill moved from the house onto the road he was shouting at the residents and a Police officer asked him to calm down but he refused and threatened the officer.

Dill was then told he was going to be arrested but he escaped, leaving his shoes, helmet and other personal belongings behind.

While the officers were placing the items in the Police car, Dill returned, shouting and cursing.

He placed one of the Police officers in a head lock as they attempted to arrest him.

After he was restrained, Dill was taken to the Somerset Police Station where it appeared he had calmed down. The handcuffs were removed and he was searched.

Dill began to struggle once he realised that he was going to be placed in a cell.

As he was being transported to the courtyard where the cells were located, he grabbed a $100 wooden panelling that was located inside the office and ripped it from the wall.

He bit one Police officer on the leg and two others on their hands before he was re-handcuffed and placed in a cell.

Mrs. Mapp fined Dill $250 each for assaulting, P.c. Cox, P.c Hinds and P.c.

Tempest-Mitchell, $100 for using offensive words, $150 each for assaulting Sgt. Alderson and P.c. Brewer and $100 compensation for the damaged panelling.
