Most concern was expressed over a sailor, in his 60s, heading towards Bermuda on the 35-foot Pals One from Norfolk, Virginia.

The yacht set off to compete in the Caribbean 1500 on November 2, but the owner began to experience steering difficulties.

He was advised to rest yesterday by Harbour Radio when he was 84 miles Northwest of the Island.

In better shape are the crew of Caplan II which sent a distress signal from 240 miles west of the Island yesterday.

The boat was in difficulties when it lost a mast but was aided by a Norwegian vessel, Star Skogangbre .

A Harbour Radio spokesman said: "Both boats are both making their way into Bermuda under their own steam but we are keeping a close eye on the Pals One .'' In another incident Mr. Edward Darrell was fishing off Horseshoe Bay in his 15-foot, Bermudian-built boat FX2 when he found he had engine difficulties.

He set off a flare, which at first was believed to be a fire. Harbour Radio contacted boats in the area and Mr. Darrell was towed to Sinky Bay by the 20 foot boat Magic .

Police met the boat when it arrived and are considering charging Mr. Darrell because he had no radio equipment.
