the party's ability to manage change.

A new UBP slogan, "The future depends on it,'' first appeared in the party's print advertising yesterday and also figures prominently in television and radio ads, UBP executive officer Mr. Joe Gibbons said.

The slick TV ads, which first appeared on Sunday, highlight new faces among UBP candidates and steps Government took to fight the impact of the recession.

One TV spot shows Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan talking to workers at a construction site and talks of his "plan to put Bermudians back to work.'' Bermuda was affected by the recession, but thanks to Government's management, "the signs are everywhere of the recovery,'' the ad says.

The two 60-second TV ads would appear on local channels around dinnertime over the next few days or weeks, Mr. Gibbons said.

The ads were produced by Panatel VDS Ltd. of Bermuda, with consultation from "one or two overseas production people''.

The radio spots have a similar theme and began today.

The Premier has not called an election, but "it is clearly because we are in an election year that we are advertising,'' Mr. Gibbons said.

Progressive Labour Party campaign co-chairman Mr. Terry Lister said the PLP would wait for the election call to launch its campaign.

"We don't see any need to be running ads at this point,'' Mr. Lister said yesterday. "We're ready.

"We've done what we need to do to win an election. Hopefully, we'll get the call within two weeks.'' The PLP would advertise, but believed the campaign would be won on the doorsteps, he said.

As well as the party's changing face, the ads would highlight Government's record, Mr. Gibbons said.

"Managing Bermuda through the recession was no small feat,'' he said. "Other political parties may belittle that fact.'' The Island faced many challenges, and "the UBP clearly feels that now it is the political party best able to manage this change process''.

For two weeks the UBP has run daily newspaper ads in The Royal Gazette highlighting the party's newer candidates. Each candidate is introduced under the heading: "Introducing the next generation of leadership for Bermuda.''
