serious consideration to what kind of people they want their elected representatives to be.

Bermuda is a first rate country, the best of the islands, and it has an economy which is healthy and which is envied. As a Country we deserve politicians with high principles who apply those principles to governing Bermuda. We do not think Bermudians want to be represented by people who are not honourable or worthy. We do not think they want to be represented by people who bend the truth.

Bermudians care about Bermuda and other Bermudians, therefore Bermuda's representatives should be concerned more with the welfare of individuals and the community than with themselves. Parliamentarians should be there to serve the people and the Country and not to help themselves. Too many countries have suffered in recent years from elected representatives who literally helped themselves first and thought of the people and the Country much later, if at all. The Bahamas today is a classic example of that behaviour.

This is a Country which has a long history of selfless public service contributed freely in the spirit of helping Bermuda and Bermudians. Voters should be guarded when they consider politicians who may be looking for personal gain and private riches. The Bermudian way, ranging from membership in sports councils to church guilds to charities to parish committees to Government boards, is public service freely given by Bermudians to Bermuda and to other Bermudians.

The great fear, of course, is politicians who seek and enjoy personal power and greater glory. They want power to control other people in order to glorify themselves and to do as they please without considering others. They may even want power to settle scores. These people can easily run amok. They can be corrupted and tend to attract to themselves others who can be or have been corrupted by power or glory or cash.

Too often politicians are bent on "I, Me, Mine'' and have little interest in yours or ours or Bermuda's. Surely we do not want politicians who do not respect the rights and the dignity of individuals in this community.

Politicians bent on themselves seldom consider the rights of others.

People want representatives who will be careful about how Bermuda earns its living and who will look after the good living we have now. It takes talent and experience to do that. It also takes knowledge of how the economy works and an ability to attract international business.

Bermuda needs people of proven ability to run its affairs and not people who run for office to get a job. We think Bermudians want representatives who have a job and who are looking to contribute to the Country and not people who are looking to the Country for a job.

Bermuda is a quality country, it needs quality representation. It should shun opportunists and those who are only a lot of mouth. It should be very careful how it employs those who need a job. As best we can, we should elect those who are worthy of a vote. We should look for those people who have high principles and respect for Bermuda and Bermudians.
