Community, Cultural Affairs and Information Minister the Hon. Leonard Gibbons told The Royal Gazette : "There was a mention that it (the Bermuda Library advertisement) was too large. But it was done in the UK before arriving here''.

The Transport Control Department kept the $100,000 Bookmobile off the road for some six weeks after its arrival in January because of questions about its width.

But, Mr. Gibbons said, no one at TCD complained about the size of the advertisement and the vehicle was passed.

He also said the cost of "re-doing it at that time seemed a bit too much''.

While Mr. Gibbons said he did not know how much it would have cost to change the advertisement when the van arrived, he said it would have to be repaired "sooner or later'' so Government would wait until then to change the size of the advertisement.

The van is expected to be repainted within the next six months, he added.

When contacted yesterday TCD director Mr. Donald Dane said he was not familiar with the matter and would have to look into it.
