Helper of the homeless calls for more support

A woman whose home is a valuable base for those who have nowhere to go has called for another organisation to take some of the load.

Patricia Parsons regularly opens the doors of her Hamilton Parish home to men and women who find themselves without shelter and food.

But now she says it is time for someone else, possibly the Government or another group, to look at the possibility of setting-up a home for those who are less fortunate.

And she has offered to renovate a building and run it, if someone can come up with a location for a shelter.

"If we can find a building, I am prepared to do all the work,'' she said.

Miss Parsons has already been in contact with Premier Pamela Gordon and is waiting for the Progressive Labour Party to get in touch, with the aim of getting their input on the project.

She is hopeful somebody will come up with an idea for a building, and her Rastafarian Community Programme will take it from there.

"My concern is to get these people out of the weather, because winter is coming, and the elderly in particular should not be outside.'' To back her claim, Miss Parsons said that last Tuesday night saw a dozen people, many of them elderly, seeking shelter from the storms brought in as Hurricane Danielle passed the Island.

"Most of them came to us because of the weather,'' she said. "For many of them, shelter is a brown paper bag.

"There should be an official shelter, even a little barn; many people would be thankful for that.'' Miss Parsons does her best with the resources available to her and with what other people provide -- food and second-hand clothing are all donated to aid the less fortunate.

Anyone who can help is asked to call 292-2674.
