The warning came yesterday from Police Media Relations spokesman P.c. Gary Venning after several fake bills surfaced around the Island.

The counterfeits lack some important features of the genuine notes which make them readily detectable. Anyone handling $100 notes should compare them to a genuine note where the differences can be easily spotted.

P.c. Venning said the real bills feature a strong watermark of a tuna fish which can be seen when the note is held up to the light and a strong lead line running through the note with the word Bermuda written in fine print.

He said that if you suspect a person of trying to pass a counterfeit note then take possession of the note along with some form of identification.

Try to notify the Police while the person is on the premises but if this is not possible then get a good description of the individual concerned.

If a counterfeit note is discovered or suspected, Det. Con. David Cooper of the Commercial Crime Unit should be contacted at 299-4254.
