Rider fined for careless driving

Pedro Madeiros, of 75 North Shore Road, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to driving without due care on September 15.

The court heard that Police, who were travelling east on Middle Road, Smith's Parish -- near Flatts -- saw Madeiros, who was coming from the east near the Aquarium, overtake a taxi and a car.

Pedro's actions prevented the taxi driver from making a right turn, prosecutor Sgt. Phil Taylor said.

Pedro continued to ride up toward Middle Road and was stopped near Whitney Institute.

Sgt. Taylor also pointed out that Pedro had been fined $180 in June for speeding and was banned from driving until October 16, 1999.

Pedro told Senior Magistrate Will Francis that he did not overtake the taxi near the junction and the taxi did not indicate that it was turning right.

But Mr. Francis said the taxi did not need to signal.

He ordered Pedro to pay a $250 fine.

"I'm not going to bother with the disqualification because you're off the road anyway,'' Mr. Francis added.
