in Southampton East last night.

Mr. Reginald Burrows and Mr. Stanley Lowe grabbed 67.8 percent of the total votes cast, soaring past United Bermuda Party candidates Mr. Anthony Santucci and Mr. Calvin Simons.

Mr. Burrows topped the polls with 754 votes, while Mr. Lowe was close behind with 747.

The total number of ballots cast was 1,134. There were 1,510 registered eligible voters.

"The outcome was exactly what I expected,'' Mr. Burrows said. "People in Southampton East have been satisfied with the work we've done. They are the ones to decide who would be elected.'' He described the mood among voters as "positive'', adding, "It was a joyous and happy occasion.'' Mr. Lowe who was hurrying to leave for a victory celebration said he felt wonderful.

"I am overwhelmed with our continued success,'' he said. "We have tried to make a difference, and we've demonstrated that. I'm exhilarated.'' "It's been simply wonderful, except for the rain,'' he said earlier, predicting, "At the end of the day I think we will be pleased.'' Still looking cheerful, the UBP's Mr. Anthony Santucci, who received 357 votes said: "My running mate and I will continue to work in the community to bring to fruition many of the ideas and opportunities expressed by the people of Southampton East.'' He added: "I feel good, and life goes on.'' Mr. Calvin Simons, who also received 357 votes said that despite the loss he still felt "fantastic''.

"It was encouraging, we put up a good fight but the best team won,'' Mr.

Simons said.

Mr. Santucci got more votes this year for the UBP than he got last year as a National Liberal Party candidate.

Before the candidates went behind closed doors for the count they all agreed on the steady turn-out of young and old voters.

The rainy election day weather did not seem to keep Southampton East residents away.

Mr. Burrows quipped they had "weathered the storm''. First-time candidate Mr.

Simons said that running for UBP was an exciting experience. "I'm in a learning mode. I felt it was time for a person like myself to step in and make a difference,'' he said.
