yesterday, as students traded their school uniforms for African attire in a celebration of unity.

Whether it was face painting or the coin toss, students were treated to African stories from Mrs. Ruth Thomas of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, and dancing from The Empress Mennen dancers.

Principal Mr. Livingstone Tuzo, said yesterday's celebration was part of a larger theme. "Our overall theme for the term is Africa,'' he said. "We are tying in the theme with the African Art show at City Hall.

"We came up with a title for the day. It's Harambee or unity. In the morning assembly we had an African parade. All the children were dressed in their African attire along with their teachers and parents. The classes are all decorated.

"Different classes will be going to see the art exhibition after they learn a bit more about the background.'' But this is just one of many other events planned. "We are thinking about a Christmas programme celebrating the Gombeys, and we are putting plans in place for an African Thanksgiving in November,'' he said.

AFRICA DAY -- Nine-year-old Melesia Iris and Shadir Furqan, six, celebrate Harambee! (Unity). It was part of the Africa Day at Victor Scott yesterday.

Students, teachers and parents joined in for the celebrations.
