yesterday, after the man admitted stealing more than $7,000 worth of jewellery during an early morning smash and grab at a Front Street store.

Ryan Norris Furbert, of Long Ridge Pass Devonshire, pleaded guilty to stealing two bracelets and a necklace worth $7,880 from the Walker Christopher jewellery store last Friday.

Police prosecutor Insp Peter Duffy said eyewitnesses saw Furbert strike the store's front door with a maul around 2.30 a.m., climb through the hole and proceed to smash a display case.

He then removed a necklace and two bracelets and left the store on a Yamaha motorcycle that was parked outside. He sped off west on Pitts Bay Road.

Police went to a home on Mount Hill where they found the cycle, maul and hatchet.

He attempted to run away but was caught.

Magistrate the Wor. Cheryl Ann Mapp committed Furbert to the Supreme Court for sentencing because he has a criminal record for similar offences that dates back to 1987.
