Pink Beach in Smith's will close from January 5 to March 1 for an extensive revamp.

And Paget's The Palm Reef will shut down throughout December and part of January.

Two other small properties announced they would be offering a limited service to guests.

Mermaid Beach in Warwick will undergo renovations in January.

The kitchen will be closed, and there will be no food for guests.

And Southampton's Pompano Beach will be partially shut down for two-and-a-half weeks in January.

"We will only have guests on a no meals basis,'' said general manager Mr. Tom Lamb.

Meanwhile, two further hotels said yesterday they had not made up their minds over a winter shutdown.

Cambridge Beaches in Sandy's and Glencoe Harbour Club in Paget are still weighing up their options.

Winter closures are commonplace among Bermuda's small hotels.

Hoteliers take advantage of the slow season to give their properties a fresh lick of paint.

Pink Beach's general manager Mr. W.A.(Toppy) Cowen said: "Every year we close around the same dates.

"It allows us to carry out renovations. The bathrooms this year will be renovated.

"And work will also be done to the patios of the cottages.'' Mr. Cowen said between 35 and 40 people would be employed at the hotel during the closure.

Mrs. Bridget Marshall, general manager of The Palm Reef, said her hotel would probably reopen on January 15.

"We need to do a lot of renovations. The bathrooms need doing, and there will be some recarpeting.

"There won't be any guests. It's obviously difficult to do the work while guests are here.'' She added: "We may, however, have some Christmas functions.'' Mr. Mike Chase, controller of Mermaid Beach, said: "The hotel will still be operating in January, although it won't be fully functional.

"We will have guests, although we won't be able to offer them a full service.

"The kitchen will be closed for maintenance and so there will be no food.'' The hotel closed for the first time ever last year between December and January.

Mr. Lamb said Pompano would close for January 5-23.

"That is the normal procedure. It allows staff to go on vacation, and for repainting to be carried out.

"We will be able to repaint the pool.'' Mr. Jason Powell, general manager of Glencoe, said a January closure was a possibility.

Normally, guests would be offered bed and breakfast.

Mr. Powell said a decision on whether to close would probably be made in the middle of next month.

Telecommunications Minister the Hon. Michael Winfield, who is general manager of Cambridge Beaches, said no decision had been made.
