The table and bench were part of improvements to the park two years ago, as part of multi-millon dollar scheme covering the whole Island.

The vandalism was spotted by two members of the public who take their dogs for walks in the park every morning.

One of the people, who asked not to be named, said: "It is quite amazing the way they have destroyed this table.

"It is very heavy and they must have taken a sledgehammer to it to destroy this table and the chair. They are really smashed.'' In fact, the tables two, thick stone legs were split in half during the attack, on Saturday.

The man said: "There are a group of people who regularly drink down there at night. There are always empty bottles.'' Environment Minister Mr. Gerald Simons said: "They are a year or two old.
