For the first week of November, visitor arrivals were up 18.4 percent over the same week a year earlier, to 10,181. The 8,459 air arrivals marked an increase of 7.6 percent, while the 1,722 cruise ship arrivals reflected a jump of 134.3 percent.

For the year to date, air arrivals were up 9.6 percent, to 374,789, while cruise ship arrivals were up 18.6 percent, to 153,841.

Wingood, 56, of Wingood Way, Sandys Parish, admitted driving while impaired in Middle Road, Devonshire on October 16.

Police prosecutor Sgt. Rex Osborne said Wingood collided with a vehicle coming in the opposite direction.

The collision occurred as Wingood set out to turn right.

Wingood, who claimed the other driver had been speeding, said he was self-employed and needed the truck for work.

But Mr. Judge said the law required Wingood to be taken off the road for a year.

He also fined Wingood $400.

BAHA'IS MARK FOUNDER'S BIRTH CHU The Baha'i Faith of Bermuda will celebrate the anniversary of the birth of its founder Baha'u'llah on Friday.

Born Mirza Husayn Ali, on November 12, 1817 in the Province of Nur, Persia, he was a member of a noble Persian family.

GAS LEAK REPORTED FIR The smell of gas was noticed in the Bailey's Bay area yesterday, but the odour disappeared before the Bermuda Fire Service could detect the source.

Residents near Francis Patton School thought they detected a propane leak, a spokesman said.

Two vehicles and nine men responded shortly after 9 a.m., but could not find the source of the smell, which disappeared.

VISITOR FINED CTS New Yorker Lawrence Waxman was fined $525 at Magistrates' Court yesterday for two drug offences.

The 48-year-old admitted having 3.19 grams of cannabis, and a pipe and cigarette papers for smoking the drug.

Prosecutor Sgt. Rex Osborne said the offences came to light at the Civil Air Terminal on November 5.
