Elizabeth Mary Gould, 37, of Southlyn Lane, Paget, pleaded guilty before Magistrate the Wor. Charles-Etta Simmons.

Insp. Peter Duffy, the Police prosecutor, said officers used a warrant to search Gould's home on June 15. In the living room they found a plastic bag containing plant material and four partially-smoked marijuana cigarettes, Insp. Duffy said.

In a bedroom, officers found another plastic bag containing more plant material. And outside, a cannabis plant was seized.

Insp. Duffy said a total of 6.51 grams of marijuana was seized.

The woman, who is English and works in Bermuda as a graphic designer, denied knowledge of the marijuana when she was questioned at the Police station, Insp. Duffy said.

Mr. Mark Pettingill, Gould's lawyer, said his client does not use marijuana and was making "a reluctant plea'' of guilty.

"On the advice of counsel, she now appreciates that in a technical sense she is in all likelihood guilty of the offence of possession,'' Mr. Pettingill said.

Gould's roommate, who moved out in September of 1993, was using marijuana, he said.

"It is interesting to note, your Worship, that the marijuana which was found in a drawer in the residence had a sticky label on it with a date of September, 1993,'' Mr. Pettingill said.

"We would submit that it had been in that drawer since that time.'' Gould "denies being a user of marijuana,'' but "is guilty of perhaps not being as fastidious as she should be.'' The conviction would have a "devastating'' effect on the woman, who has no previous criminal record, he said.

"I'm sure there's a lesson to be learned in this for you,'' Ms Simmons said.
