And for UBP MP Ann Cartwright DeCouto it is high time women wore the trousers.

Last night Mrs. Cartwright DeCouto argued the right of women MPs to wear long pants in the House.

This would not only put them on a par with their male colleagues -- but also women lawyers.

"In another place downstairs the ruling is that lady members of the Bar may wear trouser suits,'' she said.

A smiling House Speaker Ernest DeCouto suggested the matter could be referred to the Rules and Privileges Committee.

Not to be outdone, two male MPs had some sartorial suggestions of their own last night.

MP Dennis Lister and Tourism Minister David Dodwell argued for Bermuda shorts in the House. "This is our national dress,'' said Mr. Dodwell.
