American Airlines Flight AA415, which holds about 200 passengers and departs seven days a week, will no longer be operating its roundtrip service from Bermuda to New York at 12.20 p.m. after September due to rising fuel costs.

In addition, the flight will not be operating on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays this month, due to an unrelated matter. AA spokesperson Tim Smith, explained that an unusually high amount of pilots retired from American Airlines at the start of this year and the agency was trying to recover from that "bubble" this month.

Flight AA415 will continue its service as normal in July and August, before ending its tenure.

In the meantime, JetBlue has announced it will once again be adding another flight from Bermuda to JFK for the summer months.

The service will operate between Thursday and Sunday from June 29 to August 31, operating twice a week.

Aaron Adderley, General Manager of L.F.Wade International Airport, said no additional cutbacks have been mentioned by airlines operating to and from the Island.

Mr. Adderley said that while Bermuda may be impacted by rising fuel prices, compared to places such as Orlando, Florida and Hawaii, where Delta Air Lines has cut back 47 percent and 10 percent respectively, the Island's services have been doing well.

Ministry of Transport and Tourism, Bermuda Alliance for Tourism and Bermuda Hotel Association have been working proactively to stave off any potential cutbacks, said Mr. Adderley.

These organisations are working together to set up "marketing support initiatives to ensure air services remain healthy and viable", he added.

In the meantime, low-cost carrier Zoom Airlines has added an extra flight service to Fort Lauderdale, and announced they will not be cutting back their regular service to London, Gatwick.

Sallie Singleton, a British Airways spokesperson, said it would also be continuing with daily flights to the UK this summer, however, the winter schedule has not yet been finalised.

Earlier this month, British Airways announced it would be increasing the fuel surcharge from $121 to $151.
