Benches, footpaths and bridges are planned for new nature reserves
A charity dedicated to preserving Bermuda's open spaces for future generations is seeking planning permission for two new nature reserves on opposite sides of the Island.
Buy Back Bermuda has drawn up proposals to add footpaths, benches, illustrative signs and small bridges at Evans Bay Pond, Skroggins Hill, Southampton, and Eve's Pond, Hamilton Parish.
The conservation group launched a fund-raising drive in October 2007 to buy the two parcels of land — its second campaign after it successfully bought a site which became Somerset Long Bay East Nature Reserve.
The $2.5 million target was exceeded by May last year, with more than 700 people and the Government giving cash and Skroggins Hill owner Sharon Vesey donating her 7.5-acre plot for free.
BBB spokesman David Saul told The Royal Gazette yesterday: "Because we will be planting new native trees, removing invasive trees and plants, clearing some small parking areas and putting up benches and signs, the law requires us to submit these plans to Government for final approval.
"The plans are now being submitted to the Department of Planning and, as soon as planning approval has been received, work will be started to bring these comprehensive plans to fruition. It is all designed to entice the general public and school groups to visit and enjoy these properties."
The former Premier said it was hoped work could start this year and that the two reserves would open in 24 to 36 months time.
The success of the second BBB campaign means that about 11 acres of land which could have been developed on will now be transferred into the joint ownership of the Bermuda Audubon Society and the Bermuda National Trust. BBB is looking to launch a third campaign soon.
Dr. Saul said he hoped both of the new reserves would eventually mirror the popularity of the Somerset wildlife attraction.
"That lovely reserve, known affectionately as Pitman's Pond, is right next to the Government Park at Somerset Long Bay, near Cambridge Beaches, and has been visited by hundreds of people, including lots of tourists.
"Every visitor finds this tranquil area to be peaceful and a pleasurable experience. It is highly recommended as a spot for a pleasant afternoon's stroll."
