Business owner Jeff Sousa has called for Government to do something about the cross walk at the junction of Camp Hill and Middle Road before someone gets seriously injured.

Mr Sousa is the owner of Sousa's Landscaping and the chairman of the UBP.

He claims to have written the Minister of Transport, Ewart Brown and the Speaker of the House, Stanley Lowe, to discuss ways to fix the problem.

He said those calls have gone unanswered for the past three years and worries that a small child might fall victim to the dangerous road.

"I want to talk about what is a real concern for the community. I have known that area my entire life as a little boy. Down at this intersection, getting out the bottom is a problem. My main concern is the cross walk. I have been here for 15 years and I can't count the number of accidents in this spot. People go fast."

"I would say with no hesitation that there's more business here and a greater population here."

Mr. Sousa said he has almost been knocked down a few times in the 15 years that his business has been in Warwick.

"I'm a big bie. What chance does a small child have? I went to a PLP meeting in 2006 and I brought up these concerns to the Minister of Transport, Dr. Brown. When I was bringing up these points, he was writing them down. To date, no action.

"And I'll be honest, I have never seen the MP for the area, Mark Pettingill, in the area. I have also stopped and spoken to the Speaker of the House [Stanley Lowe] and what I want to ask is why do we as a community always wait for something like a child to be knocked down and then react? Why not be proactive?"

Mr. Sousa continued: "Why are we going to wait? You're going to have an innocent child be knocked down.

"In the meantime, we're losing our brothers and sisters. I know I don't want to have the blood on my hands. I'll be the one dealing with it because my business is here."

He said he keeps trying to get help with the situation but has yet to hear from anyone in Government.

Mr. Sousa said with Bermuda Institute students often using the cross walk, lights similar to those at Whitney Institute could be the solution.

"You need to put the red stops in the road. You need to slow down people, make them aware there's a crossing there.

"Every morning, I get here early. I'll go to cross and wait for people to stop and bikes are going across. We spend so much money on stupid things. Let's spend money on something that gives people value. I really think people need to get involved. I am doing my part. God's blessed me and I am looking to bless other people."
