Cashiers stole from their own store
Two Phoenix Store cashiers have admitted stealing items worth $239 from their employer.
Dena Swan, 22, and Mandisa Smith, 19, were caught when their bags were searched by security staff as they left work on April 28.
A number of items were found, for which the pair could not produce receipts.
At Magistrates' Court yesterday, prosecutor Robert Welling did not specify what the stolen goods were.
Store managers checked cash register records and CCTV cameras, then called the Police.
Both women pleaded guilty to theft. Swan, from Warwick, also pleaded guilty to falsifying transactions on the cash registers and Smith, from Pembroke, admitted concurring in that crime.
Mr. Welling said some items that had gone through the registers were voided, and others were not entered.
Invited to address Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner, Swan said: "I just apologise for my actions. I have learned my lesson. It won't happen again.
Smith had nothing to say.
Mr. Warner adjourned the case until July 19 so pre-sentence reports can be prepared, and released the women on $1,000 bail.
Both have been fired from the Phoenix Store, which is located on Reid Street, Hamilton.
