Christmas Boat Parade attracts a record entry

The Christmas Boat Parade will be a worthy "grand finale of Bermuda's 400th anniversary", according to the event's organiser.

The show returns on Saturday after a year's hiatus with a record 90 entries and 20 prize categories.

"There has been a really good turn out so far," said event organiser Stephen Thompson. "I think that people may have just needed a break and now they are ready again.

"In the past we have had more than 20,000 people watching the parade, making it the largest spectator event in Bermuda."

Veterans John Carr and Anthony Mello are again participating.

According to Mr. Mello, his boat AJ's Wings will bear a replica St. David's Lighthouse.

"It is going to be a very spectacular event," he said. "This is probably going to be the best year ever. I have seen some of the entries and there is one in particular that I am sure will win best overall.

"I think Mr. Carr is going to be in for a surprise this year."

The parade starts at 6.30 p.m. in the harbour near the Fairmont Hamilton Princess.

The boats will follow a route around Hamilton Harbour rounding White's Island and following Harbour Road before turning right at Darrell's Wharf and crossing towards Pitt's Bay Road. They will then head back along the same route.

Marine Police and Marine & Ports will be operating control boats to ensure a safe and clear route for the parade.

"We do ask that boats are not moving in the harbour as of 6 p.m. on the evening of the parade," Mr. Thomson said.

A fireworks display is planned after the parade, at 8.15 p.m.

At approximately 8.30 p.m. the Kennel Boys band will perform at a prizegiving and party at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess.
