Customer threatened to send guest worker home in a trash bag

A 40-year-old who threatened to send a guest worker "back to Canada in a trash bag" was fined in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Kamla Battersbee, of Ocean Sands Road, Warwick pleaded guilty to using offensive words while a patron in a restaurant on May 17.

Crown counsel Auralee Cassidy said Battersbee told a staff member at the Quick Bites restaurant in Washington Mall: "B***h, remember, you're Canadian and I'm Bermudian.

"You're on my f***ing Island. I'll send you back to Canada in a trash bag."

Duty counsel Peter Farge said that while Battersbee had run-ins with the court in the past, she had been making progress before this incident.

Mr. Farge said: "She has been in recovery, and she's been doing well over the past few years."

Battersbee apologised for the incident and promised that it would not be repeated.

"It's a long story. In the end, she just beat me to the punch by going to the Police first.

"I would like to say I'm very sorry. It won't happen again."

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Battersbee $500, telling her: "Make sure this is the last time I see you before me."
