The Countess Mountbatten of Burma and Lady Pamela Hicks toured the Island over the last two weeks, following in the footsteps of their father.

Lady Hicks and Lady Mountbatten, the daughters of the late Earl of Mountbatten of Burma said they enjoyed the Islands, particularly the Town of St George's.

Speaking to The Royal Gazette yesterday, Lady Mountbatten said: "It is beautiful. St Peters is absolutely impressive with so much in such a small space.

"It's a town that has just been untouched, and it needs to stay that way."

The pair also made a point to visit the Maritime Museum in Dockyard, where their father visited 35 years earlier.

"We went to see our father's pictures there. In 1975 he was there. It's interesting to have the family connection."

The Earl Mountbatten of Burma was assassinated in 1979 by the Provincial Irish Republican Army, who planted a bomb in a fishing boat.

When he died, his eldest daughter, Lady Mountbatten, succeeded him.

Lady Hicks said that because of their upbringing, she and her sister were able to see much of the world, but had not previously been to Bermuda.

"We have been able to see many fascinating countries, especially with our father in the Navy sailing around the world.

"What is most amazing about Bermuda are the people. Everybody seems to be so happy. They're always smiling."

Asked about the upcoming wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton, Lady Mountbatten said: "We haven't received an invitation yet. They haven't sent them out. I'm not sure if they have even set a date yet."

Lady Mountbatten and Lady Hicks both left the Island yesterday.
