GP1 caught in Washington Street loading zone again
Premier Ewart Brown's official car has again been photographed in a loading zone next to Hamilton bus station.
GP1 was spotted in the Washington Street space — which the public have repeatedly been urged not to use because of safety concerns — at 2.23 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.
The Royal Gazette reader who stood in the pouring rain to take the picture said it was difficult to tell who was in the car.
He said it did not seem to be a Regimental driver, and the back seat passenger appeared thinner than Dr. Brown. The pair appeared to be waiting for whomever the front seat passenger was.
The Premier's press secretary Glenn Jones refused to say who was in the vehicle when it pulled in and out of the loading zone, and why it was parked there.
Last time GP1 was photographed in the loading zone, in April, Mr. Jones initially blamed the driver and issued a statement saying the Premier was not in the BMW when the picture was taken, directing the media to the Governor for a comment.
However, after eyewitnesses said they'd seen Transport Minister Dr. Brown getting out of the car when it pulled into the spot, the Premier admitted that was the case; he said he had been getting a haircut.
The reader who took Wednesday's picture said: "The loading zone that GP1 is parked in is only big enough to fit one loading vehicle.
"The white truck in front of it is parked on a double yellow line. Is it possible the truck was forced to park there because GP1 was occupying the loading zone?"
Earlier this year, bus drivers went on work-to-rule to protest against safety hazards created by private vehicles cutting through the bus depot.
It led to Corporation of Hamilton boss Ed Benevides issuing a reminder that the loading zone is for loading and unloading only.
