Hotel workers meet today on wage freeze
Hotel workers will today discuss whether to agree to a wage freeze for the second year running.
Bermuda Industrial Union is holding three meetings for its members to outline a fresh proposal from the Hotel Employers of Bermuda (HEB).
BIU president Chris Furbert told The Royal Gazette yesterday that the union had received a letter from the organisation, which would be read out to workers.
"It would be an extension to the wage freeze that's already in place," he explained. "It's been in place for a year."
He said he could not comment further until after the closed sessions had taken place.
An agreement, brokered with the help of the Government, was reached between the BIU and HEB at the start of 2009, which meant workers would not seek pay increases in return for payroll tax exemption.
Asked about the prospect of extending payroll relief last week, Premier and Tourism Minister Ewart Brown said Government would continue to help hoteliers as long as it was in the country's economic interests.
Today's BIU meetings are taking place at 9 a.m. at the Fairmont Southampton Princess, noon at Grotto Bay and 3 p.m. at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess.
No one from HEB could be contacted for comment yesterday.
