Indian film crew heading for Bermuda in 2011
Another Indian filmmaker has set his sights on shooting a movie on Bermuda's shores.
Yesterday, Gridharilal Nagpal said he hoped to shoot the entire film on the Island in early 2011.
Mr. Nagpal is president of the Film and Television Producers' Guild of South India.
The producer, who has made 14 films, met Premier Ewart Brown yesterday after visiting Dockyard and Tucker's Point.
Today he plans to check out Crystal Caves and go on a glass bottom boat tour before heading to the US to be with family.
"It is beautiful here and the people are very friendly," he said. "We are constantly looking for new locations to shoot films and many are done in the US, Bermuda is just 90 minutes from the US so it is easy to shoot here."
He has yet to decide what type of film will be made, though he is leaning towards a love story. He is to bring his director of photography to Bermuda in December with shooting to begin in February. Approximately 50 cast and crew would come to the Island.
Mr. Nagpal is the second film producer to visit the Island through Government consultant Ven Subramanian. Mr. Subramanian told The Royal Gazette he lives in California but visits Bangalore in India frequently. He added that he has contacts within the film industry in India.
Mr. Subramanian is a chartered public accountant and has a Master's in Business Administration. He also serves as a consultant for Intelligent Management Solutions. The company focuses on outsourcing accounting and data entry jobs to India.
Mr. Subramanian brought the producers of the action film 'Veera' to the Island last spring. Yesterday he said the official launch of the film will take place on Friday in Hyderabad. The lead actor is Indian film star Ravi Teja.
A press release stated: "Offering back-to-back hits, Ravi Teja is a producer's darling. 'Veera' will be produced by Sanvi Productions and will be directed by Ramesh Varma. According to the makers of the movie 'Veera' will be a stylish action flick.
"Ravi Teja, of late, has been with the company of two heroines in his recent movies. In 'Veera' he will have the charming Anushka and the pretty Taapsee as the heroines."
One dance sequence in 'Veera' will be filmed in Bermuda. Previously it was reported that this would take place in September or October. Yesterday Mr. Nagpal said scheduling conflicts with the lead actors resulted in the filming date change. It will not be shot in January.
As for the benefits of Indian film, he said: "People are flying across the world just to look at Bermuda. They are serious. Millions of people watch these films, including Indians living in the US and Canada which are large markets for Bermuda. Those expatriate Indians are quite wealthy and often people want to visit places they have seen in the films."
Switzerland is one country that has seen a benefit to linking up with Indian films. Movie studio Yash Raj Films recently joined up with Kuoni Travel Group in India to provide tours of the locations where approximately 18 films have been made in the European country.
The country's tourism board has said the films have helped drive more Indian tourists to the Swiss Alps approximately a quarter million Indians visited in 2008, according to the Swiss government's tourism figures.
