Ingemann:–I didn't think Police would believe the truth
A woman accused of glassing a love rival in a nightclub has admitted lying to the Police after her arrest – telling a jury she didn't think they would believe the truth.
According to Wendy Ingemann, she punched Tanya Darrell in the face after months of harassment stemming from the fact that she had a relationship with the father of Ms Darrell's child.
She claimed the punch came after Ms Darrell threw a drink over her 17-year-old daughter Shante Ingemann in Splash nightclub in the early hours of February 10, 2006.
However, she denied glassing Ms Darrell in the face and causing her cuts that needed plastic surgery, as the prosecution alleges.
Quizzed by defence lawyer Elizabeth Christopher about why she told the Police after her arrest that she never engaged in any physical altercation with Ms Darrell in the club, Ingemann replied that she did not trust them because they had done nothing about her claims of harassment.
In addition, she claimed she was told she was being charged with assault prior to the Police interview, and therefore felt detectives had already made their minds up.
"I knew I had punched Tanya Darrell. I never had a glass or any type of weapon in my hand at that time and I felt from the prior conversation to the interview that they had a prejudiced mind to the fact that I had used a weapon. I felt this caused them to have a very biased opinion of the whole situation," she told the court.
Ingemann said she believed the Police would obtain CCTV footage from the night that would show the true picture of what happened – but this was never forthcoming.
Crown counsel Robert Welling later cross-examined her over the fact that she repeatedly told the Police during an interview the day after the incident that she had not touched Ms Darrell inside the club. Ingemann agreed that she lied.
"It was quite obvious that they didn't care what really happened. They had already formed their conclusions about this," she told the court.
In addition to denying a charge of wounding Ms Darrell with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, Ingemann further denies possessing a wine glass as an offensive weapon and violently resisting arrest.
The case continues.
