Island expected to escape a brush with Hurricane Danielle
Hurricane Danielle is expected to cause waves over the weekend, but Bermuda is expected to miss the worst of the storm.
As of last night, the hurricane is forecast to pass just over 200 nautical miles to the Island's southeast on Sunday morning — far enough away that the Island is unlikely to receive even tropical storm force winds.
A spokesman for the Bermuda Weather Service said last night: "The latest models have it passing even further to our east than we had expected.
"While we will start getting swells as soon as [today], we believe the winds will stay around a constant 30 knots, with gusts up to 40 knots."
Along with the wind, Bermuda may have showers and even some lightning over the weekend as the storm passes.
Despite the storm's easterly turn, Meyer Travel announced yesterday that the Norwegian Dawn would be leaving early to avoid any complications that could be caused by the storm.
The ship was scheduled to stay in port until 5 p.m. today, but will now be departing at 6.30 a.m.
While Bermuda should miss the brunt of Danielle, the hurricane could be followed next week by Tropical Storm Earl.
Over the next few days, the tropical storm which, last night was 1,748 nautical miles to the east southeast of Bermuda, is expected to become a category two hurricane as it travels west.
Early forecasts suggest it could make a turn to the north early next week.
"We're keeping an eye on it," said the spokesman. "It is still several hundred miles away from us, but there is a possibility that it could turn and pass to our west.
"It's a week away though, and a lot can happen in a week."
