Jamaicans celebrate Olympic triumph

Nearly a full block on Court Street was yesterday filled with Jamaican supporters as Digicel and Jamaican Grill threw a party in honour of Jamaica's victory at the Olympics this year.

During the event staff of Digicel threw paraphernalia at the crowd, such as t-shirts and visors with the adorned with the logo and members of the crowd were fighting to grab the goodies in hopes that they would sac a pre-paid calling card or possibly a phone.

Newly appointed CEO, Wayne Caines was hyping up the crowd getting them excited about Jamaica's victory and Digicel.

He said: "Digicel is strong in the Caribbean, our strength comes from our loyal customers.

"This afternoon we wanted to celebrate the success of the Jamaican Olympic team by having an outdoor party.

One proud Jamaican, Kimberly Kerr of St. Elizabeth, showed off her love by wearing a shimmering Jamaica shirt. She said: "It's been a long time coming and now were shinning. We na linga!"

Subria Toppin of Trinidad said: "Congratulations to the Jamaican Team and I'm very proud of Trinidad's performance as well."

Mr. Caines said: "It is always important for and international company to be relevant and touch the pulse of the people.

"Digicel has united with the Caribbean and we are excited to be a part of this. "We understand that our strength comes from the customers here in Bermuda and this is one of the many way that we would show our appreciation to our customers."

Jamaica dominated in the track and field portion of the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing with Usain Bolt winning three gold metals and breaking three world records in the men's 100-metre, 200-metre, and the relay.

In the women's track and field, the women also proved their worth by winning gold metals in the women's 100-metre, 200-metre, 400-metre and 400-metre hurdles. Melanie Walker broke the world record for the 400-metre race.
